The leader of Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) Nnamdi Kanu has directed total cancellation of sit-at-home across the Southeast.
IPOB spokesperson, Emma Powerful said in a statement on Sunday that the sit-at-home directive has been officially and permanently cancelled with effect from Monday, 9 February 2026.
He said: "This directive comes directly from Onyendu Mazi Nnamdi Kanu himself, who has once again staked everything on the line to ensure that our children return to school every Monday and that our people go about their lawful businesses without fear, intimidation, or molestation."
Powerful argued that anybody in doubt of the cancellation should visit Kanu at the Sokoto prison for confirmation.
"There is now no need, excuse, or justification for anyone to stay at home on Mondays.
"All markets, schools, offices, transport services, and economic activities must resume fully and normally. From tomorrow, the Monday sit-at-home is over," he added.
Powerful informed that Kanu mandated that henceforth, anyone or group attempting to enforce the sit-at-home in the Southeast is acting against his directive.
"Such persons are enemies of our people and the Biafran cause. They will be pursued to the ends of the earth and confronted until they are completely defeated.
"We therefore call on all our people across the Southeast to come out tomorrow (today), open their shops, go to work, and send their children to school without fear," he added.
Market Demolition
The spokesperson lamented the recent closure of Onitsha Main Market by Anambra State Governor, Prof Chukwuma Soludo due to traders’ non-compliance with the sit-at-home directive.
He stated that no governor has the right to threaten, demolish or forcibly shut down businesses of traders who, out of conscience, chose to sit at home in solidarity with Kanu.
Powerful warned that any attempt by Governor Soludo or any other governor to intimidate traders with demolition threats or forced market closures will be firmly resisted.
He noted that any renovation, reconstruction, or improvement of markets that involves temporary relocation must be carried out only with the consent of all stakeholders.
The spokesperson insisted that adequate temporary trading sites must be provided for traders before commencing such projects.
Kanu was convicted and sentenced to life imprisonment for terrorism in November, 2025, while Ekpa was imprisoned for six years in Finland for similar offence that he committed in Southeast.
Sit-at-home Order
The sit-at-home order, which has been in place for over four years, marred economic and social activities in parts of the Southeast.
It was enforced by IPOB as a response to the incarceration of leader of IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu, and threats to restore Biafra Republic.
Though killings associated with IPOB have reduced in the Southeast but traders are skeptical to open on Mondays over fear of attack.
While the sit-at-home was forcefullly terminated in Enugu, Abia and Ebonyi states, it persisted in Anambra and Imo.
