Scene of Monday bomb blast in Maiduguri
President Bola Tinubu has commiserated with the people of Borno over the recent terror attacks in the State.
At least 23 people were killed and 108 injured on Monday night, March 16, when terrorists attacked Maiduguri city, the capital of Borno State.
Security officials had attributed the attacks to Boko Haram or the Islamic State West Africa Province (ISWAP), in 17 years insurgency in the northeast.
The first explosive detonated at a post office in Maiduguri, followed by another at the popular Monday market, according to security agents and residents.
While one bomb blasted at the University of Maiduguri Teaching Hospital, another struck in Kaleri, a community in Maiduguri. Both incidences occurred on Monday evening.
The attacks, which targeted crowded areas during the holy month of Ramadan, violated years of fragile peace in Borno, forcing a security crackdown and elevating fears of prolonged conflict.
Upsetting Incident
While describing the incident as upsetting, Tinubu mourned those who lost their lives and sympathised with the injured, as well as the Borno state government.
He said: "I want to make it categorically clear that these acts of terror are the final desperate and frantic attempts by criminals and terrorist elements trying to instil and spread fear, as they are under constant pressure from our brave armed forces and security agencies operating in various theatres.
"We will continue to intensify our efforts against all criminal elements, wherever they may be.
"I must commend the courage and fighting spirit of our patriotic troops who successfully repelled the coordinated attacks by these terrorists on military positions in the state.
"The Monday attacks were desperate acts of the evil-minded terrorist groups. Our gallant military and civilian task forces will curtail and put them down.
"Just last weekend, during a security meeting with leaders of security and intelligence agencies, I approved additional equipment and operational support to enhance their capabilities. This effort is already in progress.
"Additionally, I have directed security chiefs to move to Maiduguri to take charge of the situation. I have also directed the emergency agencies to provide proper care for the injured.
"There is no place in Nigeria where terrorists will find safety. We will locate them, confront them, and completely defeat them.
"Nigeria will not succumb to fear."
Banditry
Aside insurgency in the northeast, bandits and kidnappers having been wrecking havoc in communities and schools in different parts of the north.
Given the unending attacks, the United States Military launched deadly airstrikes in December 25, 2025, against the Islamic State in Iraq and Syria (ISIS) hotspot in Northwest Nigeria over the incessant attacks on Christians.
But in February 2026, the US deployed 100 military personnel to Nigeria to strengthen the fight against insurgency and train Nigerian forces confronting insurgents.
