SHIP Project: FHFL Targets 10, 000 Housing Units By 2030

The Family Homes Funds Limited, FHFL, has finalised plans to build 10,000 social housing units by 2030, meant to empower 100,000 women and train 100,000 artisans nationwide.

To be implemented under its Social Housing Implementation Plan, SHIP, the major crux of the project is building sustainable communities and improving livelihoods, while closing the huge housing deficit gap.

Domiciled in the Presidency, the FHFL is a social housing finance institution established to expand access to affordable housing through innovative financing, strategic partnerships, and sustainable housing development.

It also supports families on low-income to attain their home ownership dreams by financing affordable housing projects that align with the New Urban Agenda and the Global Goals.

While the housing projects would be executed in phases across key regions based on identified housing needs, the initiative would combine innovative financing, sustainable construction methods and strategic partnerships to expand access to affordable housing.

The SHIP initiative is expected to be implemented through Public Private Partnerships, PPP, that will mobilise funds, facilitate land access and strengthen institutional support for housing delivery.

Also, the alternative building technology and other low-carbon materials will be promoted to improve sustainability, even as the housing projects would incorporate passive cooling systems, solar energy and natural lighting to improve energy efficiency.

The SHIP programme will priortise locally sourced building materials to reduce environmental impact and support domestic industries, even as 100,000 disadvantaged women would be empowered through opportunities created under the housing programme.

It will also incorporate the training of 100,000 artisans with construction skills to strengthen housing delivery and expand employment opportunities, just as host communities will participate in project planning and implementation to encourage ownership and sustainability.

The SHIP programme, which aligns with national housing policies and the Sustainable Development Goals, SDGs, will be supported with grants, subsidies and partnerships with development finance institutions.

It will also open up windows of opportunities for partnership with the States while providing multiple streams of income for the under-privileged, as the initiative is intended to reduce the escalating housing deficit by providing inclusive, environmentally sustainable and community-driven housing solutions.

The FHFL is confident the programme would promote economic empowerment, strengthen local capacity and improve living conditions across participating communities in line with its mandate.

Already, the FHFL has financed 10, 000 homes and created 79, 000 jobs since it commenced operation in 2018.

EHCON Unveils Technology To Phase-out Emissions, Protect Public Health

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Environmental Health Council of Nigeria (EHCON) has unveiled a technology meant to phase-out Greenhouse Gas (GHG) emissions and protect public health from emerging diseases, in line with the Paris Agreement on Climate Change.  Tagged Oxytane Fuel Additive, it is designed to enhance engine performance, increase fuel efficiency by over 25 percent, and reduce harmful emissions by up to 70 percent. It has been tested on high-capacity generators, including at the Office of the Head of Service of the Federation. Oxytane works by cleaning fuel injectors, removing carbon deposits, and improving combustion in petrol, diesel, and kerosene engines.
