The Federal Government has insisted that there are no plans to increase electricity tariff or withdraw electricity subsidies from next year despite the prolonged power crisis that had crippled the manufacturing and other informal sectors of the economy.
Rather, the government’s immediate priority is to improve electricity supply and ensure that Nigerians get better service without imposing additional financial pressure on consumers.
Minister of Power, Engr. Joseph Tegbe, who stated this at a press briefing on Monday in Abuja to mark his first 100 days in office, assured that the government would continue to work towards improving power generation, transmission and distribution to provide more reliable electricity across the country.
He said: “There is no policy by this administration to increase electricity tariffs beyond its current level. Our priority is not on tariff increase in the immediate term. Our priority is service improvement, universal metering and ensuring Nigerians pay only for the electricity they actually consume.”
Tegbe informed that the Federal Government would continue to explore measures aimed at protecting vulnerable electricity consumers while strengthening the financial sustainability of the power sector.
“The Federal Government will continue to examine additional mechanisms for protecting vulnerable consumers while simultaneously improving the financial sustainability of the market,” he added.
Tegbe stated that the ongoing reforms in the electricity sector are focused on practical implementation rather than rhetoric, promising to measure its visibility by improvements experienced in the daily lives of Nigerians.
