FG Pays ₦4.25bn To 600 Defunct Nigeria Airways Workers

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja
Prof Taiwo Oyedele

The Federal Government has paid ₦4.25 billion outstanding pension and severance benefits to an additional 600 workers of defunct Nigeria Airways Limited, bringing the total number of beneficiaries paid across 11 batches to 3,300.

Covering Batches 010 and 011, the latest payment, which amounted to ₦4,251,043,000.19 in gross benefits, extended the settlement of outstanding entitlements associated with the defunct national carrier to more eligible beneficiaries.

The first nine batches captured 2,700 workers or their beneficiaries, while the latest payment to another 600, brought the cumulative number of beneficiaries paid to 3,300.

Intended to provide financial relief to workers who have waited for the settlement of pension and severance entitlements linked to service with the former national airline, the payment represents progress in addressing longstanding obligations to eligible beneficiaries.

Meanwhile, the Federal Ministry of Finance’s verification and validation exercise for the next of kin of former Nigeria Airways workers is still ongoing, as the process is designed to establish eligibility and confirm claims against approved records in order to facilitate the settlement of outstanding benefits.

The ministry assured its determination to continuously process verified claims in line with applicable procedures, ensuring that payments are made to eligible beneficiaries.

This is even as the payment reflects the Federal Government’s efforts to resolve verified legacy claims and ensure that eligible beneficiaries receive their entitlements.

It aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda of advancing the resolution of longstanding obligations and providing financial relief to affected families.
