Minister Unveils Empowerment Scheme For 500,000 Entrepreneurs

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja Taiwo Oyedele The Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Mr Taiwo Oyedele has unveiled an empowerment scheme for 500,000 entrepreneurs, designed to close the employment gap for the youth. Tagged YouthCred, the initiative was also planned to unlock the entrepreneurial potential of young Nigerians and accelerate economic growth through access to affordable credit. NDIC Begins Payment To Depositors Of 46 Failed MFBs

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Nigeria Deposit Insurance Corporation, NDIC, has commenced the payment of insured deposits to customers of the 46 failed microfinance banks whose operating licenses were revoked by the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN. The Apex bank revoked the operating licenses of 46 Microfinance Banks effective July 1, 2026, over insufficient assets and other regulatory issues. This followed the MFB’s failure to meet the regulatory requirements for continued operation as licensed financial institutions, in accordance with Sections 12 and 13 of the Banks and Other Financial Institutions Act ,BOFIA, 2020. Customs Cautions Applicants Against Viral Recruitment Update

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Nigeria Customs Service, NCS, has cautioned applicants against succumbing to traps set by scammers through the fake recruitment update circulating on some social media platforms. Describing the information as fake, the Service hinted that the announcement did not originate from the NCS.   The purported announcement reads in part: “Nigeria Customs service wishes to officially clarify its recruitment procedures following ongoing inquiries to firmly reiterate that the entire recruitment process is entirely free of charge. Under no circumstances should any candidate be requested to make any form of payment at any stage of the verification or selection process.” Worried by the activities of scammers, the NCS advised members of the public to disregard the publication and rely only on information disseminated through the official communication channels of the Nigeria Customs Service. FG Moves To Rescue Power Sector With N729bn Bonds

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja Taiwo Oyedele The Federal Government has advanced plans to rescue the electricity sector from years of underinvestment by floating N729bn bonds in August, meant to offset the mounting debts owed by individuals and corporate organisations.  Minister of Finance and Coordinating Minister of the Economy, Taiwo Oyedele, who disclosed this at the Nigerian Bulk Electricity Trading Plc, NBET, Investors Forum in Abuja, blamed underinvestment on liquidity shortages, tariff shortfalls, mounting debts to generation companies and weak market confidence. The bond, which is part of the Presidential Power Sector Debt Reduction Programme, is expected to be set aside for the payment of verified obligations to generation companies and gas suppliers to improve liquidity, boost plant availability, and restore investor confidence in the power sector. Shettima Challenges African Countries To Develop Affordable Broadband

He stated this on Thursday in Abuja at the opening of the 7th Ordinary Session of the African Telecommunications Union, ATU, ahead of the forthcoming 2026 ITU Plenipotentiary Conference in Doha, Qatar. FMBN Plans To Build 962 Homes On Recovered Abuja Land

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja The Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria, FMBN, has set out plans to build 962 housing units on the Kaba District, Abuja land recovered by the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission, ICPC. This followed a Federal High Court order mandating the return of the forfeited property to FMBN, as the victim of the unlawful diversion of funds originally meant for the housing project.
