How Troops Captured ISWAP Commander, Killed Others

Nigerian troops on Sunday captured the commander and other members of Islamic State’s West Africa Province (ISWAP) in Niger State.  The ISWAP fighters were killed in an attempt to free their leaders detained in Army base, Daily Post revealed,  A defence intelligence officer informed PRNigeria that the military had expected the terrorists who met an ambush. “Though the incident happened in the night, the troops had been anticipating such daring moves and had been on high alert." “They came into our trap. While at least seven bodies were counted, troops arrested one of the commanders who led the fighters”, the source said. CBN Redesigns Naira, To Phase-out Old Notes Jan 31

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja In a bid to curb counterfeit, the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) has redesigned the Naira notes, expected to be released to the publics by December 15, 2022. This is even as the new and existing currencies would circulate together until January 31, 2023, being the deadline for the phase-out of old notes.   Governor of CBN, Godwin Emefiele, who disclosed this at a press conference in Abuja on Wednesday, said that the redesigned notes include: N100, N200, N500, and N1000. He was worried that about 85 per cent of the currency in circulation were hoarded by Nigerians, adding that the redesigned denominations would curtail counterfeit and ramson payment to terrorists and kidnappers. Seven Rescued As Fire Guts WAEC Lagos Office

  Rescue officials at WAEC office Lagos  About seven persons were rescued as fire gutted the headquarters of the West African Examination (WAEC) office in Lagos State on Wednesday.  The Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA) attributed the incident to a power surge.  According to the agency, “Upon arrival at the aforementioned location, a section of the WAEC headquarters multi-storey building was found to be on fire." “Further investigations revealed that the fire started on the 3rd floor of the 12-storey building due to a power surge." “A total of seven female staff of the corporation were trapped on the 5th and 7th floors and were safely evacuated due to the swift response of the rescue team on the ground. Court Orders Final Forfeiture Of Diezani’s Abuja Homes, Cars

        Diezani Alison-Madueke Justice Mobolaji Olajuwon of the Federal High Court in Abuja on Monday, ordered the final forfeiture of two Abuja properties and two luxury cars belonging to a former Minister of Petroleum Resources, Mrs. Diezani Alison-Madueke, to the federal government. The two properties are located at Plot 1854 Mohammed Mahashir Street, and No. 6, Aso Drive, in the highbrow Asokoro and Maitama Districts of Abuja are valued at $2,674,418USD and N380, 000,000 respectively. UNILORIN Announces Resumption Date For Academic Activities

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja  Following the suspension of the prolonged strike by the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), the University of Ilorin has concluded arrangements to commence academic activities on Monday, October 24, 2022. This is in line with the ratification of the amended academic calendar  by the University Senate at its 291st meeting on Friday, October 21, 2022. According to the amended calendar, final year and postgraduate students are expected back on campus on Monday while other categories of students will resume on December 15th at the commencement of the 2021/2022 academic session. Police Arrest Lagos Auto Dealer, IVD Over Wife's Death

      Late Bimbo and her husband, Ikechukwu Ogbonna  The Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old Lagos-based auto dealer, Ikechukwu Ogbonna, popularly known as IVD over the death of his wife, Bimbo. Bimbo had died on Saturday, October 15, 2022 in a hospital as a result of an injury she sustained while trying to raze down her home at Megamound Estate, Lekki, Lagos,  She sustained first degree burns while IVD escaped with minor burns. Students Resume Classes Monday As ASUU Speaks On Suspension Of Strike

COVID-19: 800 CSOs Shutdown Over Shrunken Reserves- Report

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja  President Muhammadu Buhari  Out of over 1000 Civil Society Organisations (CSOs) across the six geo-political zones in Nigeria, there is an indication that about 800 shutdown their offices and suspended operations and programmes due to shrunk reserves during the COVID-19 pandemic.  The affected CSOs include Faith-based Organisations, Community-based Organisations, Non-governmental Organisations, Social Enterprise Organisations, Unions/Coalition/Umbrella Organisations and among others.   This was further exacerbated given their over-dependence on donor agencies and weak technological infrastructure, a situation that defaced the non-profit intervention organisations.  It formed the crux of a 48-page report titled, "Impact of COVID-19 Pandemic on Civil Society Organisations in Nigeria", conducted by The West Africa Civil Society Institute (WACSI) Accra, Ghana, with support from Wilde Ganzen Foundation.  While WACSI was set up by the Open Society

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja Inside the bombed Abuja-Kaduna-bound train  Terrorists on Wednesday released the remaining 23 Abuja-Kaduna-bound train passengers six months after their abduction.  The seven-man presidential committee headed by the Chief of Defence Staff, General Lucky Irabor disclosed this on Wednesday. Terrorists had on March 28, 2022  bombed the Abuja-Kaduna train, killed nine passengers and abducted about 70 others during the attack. FG Sues Facebook, WhatsApp Owners, Demands N30bn Compensation

This is even as the government demanded N30bn as compensation for the revenue loss accrued to the treasury over what it described as illegal, unlawful and violation of extant advertising laws in Nigeria. Advertising Regulatory Council of Nigeria (ARCON) instituted the case on behalf of the federal government yesterday at the Federal High Court, Abuja Judicial Division.
