World Leaders Pay Glowing Tributes As Jimmy Carter Dies

  Late Jimmy Carter World leaders have been thrown into mourning and continued to pay glowing tributes following the death of Jimmy Carter on Sunday.  Carter, the former President of the United States of America died at the age of 100.  He passed away on Sunday afternoon at his home in Plains, Georgia. The son of the ex-president, Chip Carter confirmed his father's death in a statement on Sunday, December 29, 2024.  He said: "My father was a hero, not only to me but to everyone who believes in peace, human rights, and unselfish love. "The world is our family because of the way he brought people together, and we thank you for honouring his memory by continuing to live these shared beliefs." FG To Commence Investigation As 10 Die In Military Airstrike

  Scene of the incident The Federal Government has pledged to commence investigation on the airstrikes that killed 10 persons in Sokoto State. News Rider reports that 10 civilians died on Christmas day when the military launched airstrikes in Gidan Bisa and Runtuwa villages of Silame Local Government Area.  Though the victims were buried on Boxing Day, the airstrike also killed dozens of livestock in the affected villages. An eyewitnesses had revealed that several food silos and houses were also burnt. Air Peace Debunks Report Of Western Sahara Plane Crash

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja  One of Nigeria's leading airlines, Air Peace has debunked reports circulating on the Social Media of a purported plane crash involving one of its aircraft.  The aircraft was allegedly carrying 50 persons including the cousin of the FCT Minister, Nyesom Wike, was said to have crashed in the Western Sahara region. But in a statement on Friday in Lagos, the company described the report as false, malicious and misleading. The airline's Head of Corporate Communications, Ejike Ndiulo said the allegation that the crash resulted in fatalities including the death of a prominent individual is false.   Governor Ademola Adeleke  Osun Judiciary Clarifies Case  In line with the true spirit of Christmas, the Governor of Osun State, Sen. BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja   Late Prophetess Ogonnaya Umeham The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) FCT Council has expressed deep shock over the death of Prophetess Ogonnaya Umeham, who was a former Secretary of the Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ), FCT Chapter.  Prophetess Umeham died on Friday after a prolonged illness.  The devastating news occured barely 24 hours after the death of Hajiya Rafat Salami on Thursday night.  Salami, a broadcast journalist with the Voice of Nigeria (VON) and former Secretary of the NUJ FCT, was recently re-elected as the Treasurer of the International Press Institute (IPI) Nigeria. Until her death, Umeham was a former staff member of Daily Times Newspapers and served as the News Editor of Weekenders Magazine. Christmas Party Stampede: Ife Palace To Support Victims Families As 35 Children Perish

The Palace of Oni of Ife has pledged to support the families of the victims of Ibadan Christmas party stampede.  News Rider reports that at least 35 children died on Wednesday, December 18, 2024 at a Christmas party in Ibadan, the Oyo State capital.  The incident occured following a stampede at Islamic High School, Orita Bashorun, Ibadan, when the children rushed to collect their gifts.  Aside the casualties, about six injured persons are receiving medical attention.  The event was organised by Wings Foundation in partnership with Agidigbo FM. ECOWAS Issues Burkina Faso, Mali, Niger Six-month Ultimatum To Reconsider Withdrawal

BY CHIKA OKEKE, Abuja Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) has issued a six-month ultimatum to  Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger to reconsider their decision to exit the regional bloc. The grace period is expected to commence from January 29, 2025 and terminate on July 29, 2025.  President of ECOWAS Commission, Dr Omar Touray announced the ultimatum on Sunday in Abuja after the 66th Ordinary Session of the Authority of ECOWAS Heads of State and Government. The communique reads: "The Authority takes note of the notification by the Republic of Burkina Faso, Republic of Mali and Republic of Niger of their decision to withdraw from ECOWAS.
